3C-REN Green Building Tour in Santa Barbara with Allen Construction - Video

We recently joined the 3C-REN Green ADU Tour on the Central Coast, led by Ryan Cullinen from Allen Construction.

The tour focused on "high performance" building practices to address the construction industry's unique challenges with embodied carbon.

Watch our video highlights to learn practical insights about energy-efficient ADU construction and why air sealing can make a bigger difference than insulation in our Central Coast climate.

Central Coast AIA Lunch and Learn

On June 18th, the AIA California Central Coast chapter hosted attorney Michael A. Cable at the Madonna Inn for an educational session on AIA contract documents. The presentation covered the history of AIA contracts (dating back to 1888), the different contract series (A through G), and practical risk management strategies for architects.

Attendees enjoyed Mediterranean sandwiches and strawberry cake while learning about key documents like the B101 Owner-Architect Agreement and the foundational A201 General Conditions.

Key Takeaway: Cable highlighted how the A201-2017 General Conditions serves as the โ€œkeystoneโ€ document that gets incorporated by reference into all other agreements, ensuring consistent terminology across all project relationships. This interconnected structure helps reduce disputes by keeping everyone literally โ€œon the same page.โ€

The session concluded with Q&A and resources for digital contract management tools, providing architects with practical guidance for navigating these industry-standard agreements.

Local Government Insights: What SLOโ€™s Leaders Want from the Business Community

SLO Chamber Fireside Chat

I attended a SLO Chamber sponsored fireside chat with SLO City Mayor Erica A. Stewart and Vice Mayor Michelle Shoresman that revealed key opportunities for architects and builders to engage with city leadership. While SLO maintains a balanced budget and strong financial health, city officials are actively seeking collaboration on housing solutions, streamlined permitting processes, and innovative development approaches. They specifically called for more public-private partnerships and emphasized that direct dialogue between the development community and council members can help address permit frustrations and process improvements. The city is also exploring workforce housing solutions and wants industry input on policy decisions. This is your invitation to get more involved in shaping the policies that affect your projects.
